Mark L. Claster is the President of Carl Marks & Co. He brings more than 30 years of executive and leadership experience to the firm. As President, Mr. Claster holds an advisory role in the firm’s investment businesses and has served as a member of the investment committee for over 100 transactions. He has also served as general partner of Carl Marks’ two small business investment companies and serves on the firm’s investment committees.
In addition to his role as President, Mr. Claster also serves as president of Carl Marks Securities LLC and partner of Carl Marks Advisors. As a key management team member of the firm’s restructuring and reorganization business, Mr. Claster has held executive management roles and served as a financial advisor for companies across a wide range of industries.
Mr. Claster has also overseen numerous aspects of commercial real estate development and management while investing in properties over the past 20 years, including: a major investment on the Philadelphia waterfront; the acquisition and development of several Class-A and Class-B office complexes and numerous multi-unit residential properties throughout the country; and the acquisition and development of several high-profile hotels.
Mr. Claster is chairman of the Board of Trustees of Northwell Health, previously known as the North Shore-LIJ Health System. As part of his duties he also serves on the executive committee of Lenox Hill Hospital and Staten Island University Hospital. Additionally, Mr. Claster is a member of the Joint Board of Overseers for Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine, formerly known as Hofstra North Shore-LIJ Medical School..
As an active member of the community, Mr. Claster has served as president of Fresh Meadow Country Club, for which he led a clubhouse renovation and restoration of the Club’s golf course back to the original Charles H. Alison design. In addition to his membership on nonprofit boards, Mr. Claster is a trustee of the Carl Marks Foundation. In his personal and foundation giving, youth development, health, and Israel are among his top philanthropic priorities.
Mr. Claster began his career as an attorney with Olin & Philips, specializing in corporate and individual tax law and estate planning. He holds a BBA with honors from Ohio University, a JD from Hofstra University Law School, and an LLM in Taxation from NYU Law School. He is registered with FINRA as a General Securities Principal.
